Now with thirty one years experience in the electrical industry. Alan Smith founder of ADS CONTROL SYSTEMS
I was educated at Wirral Grammar School, Wirral College and Liverpool John Moores University, studing both Electrical/Electronic Engineering then later Power Electronics/Machines. Further study for two years reading digital techniques and microprocessor technology.
I was apprenticed to British Nuclear Fuels Ltd and further training with Vauxhall motors.
In 1982 I moved to the paper industry, working for Kimberly Clark and then Shotton Paper, both green field sites. This was the start of my fascination and interest in the paper industry.
From 1986 to 1998 I was employed as a senior engineer at a major control system company (Harland Simon), being responsible for numerous start-ups and repairs on a global scale. I specialize on web sectional line drive systems and general drive applications, both AC/DC and analogue/digital.
I also worked for 9 months in their research and development department.
During the time employed for this company, I worked in the following industries:
Paper, board, printing, plastic film, steel, copper, coal mining, naval research, marine, asbestos, carpet manufacture, tyre manufacture, thread and cloth manufacture, chemical, steel tube, water supply and others.
Countries worked in:
UK, Chile, Venezuela, Jamaica, USA, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Turkey, Israel, South Africa, Kenya, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Australia.
I have now worked in over 40 paper mills and 30 print houses.
In 1998 I formed ADS Control systems, initially service and training, but gradually expanding to much more...
